“Fishnets and Film” was created by Queer Artist (& Drag Queen) Robby Kendall (AKA Ms Sweet Nothing).
After completion of Kendall’s first film “Drag Queens Must Die!” in 2021, Kendall decided to produce a Drag Show and embed his film in the show as ‘one of the acts’. He brought in a red carpet and step-and-repeat backdrop to give his friends and guests some Hollywood style. Kendall and his team called the event “Fishnets and Film”, which happened in San Diego at Number One on Fifth (September 2021). Soon after the success of that event, Kendall pitched the concept at venues in the Bay Area closer to home. “Fishnets and Film” occurred late in 2021 at venues in Emeryville & Oakland and, in the Spring 2022, in San Jose.
As “Fishnets” continued to grow, Kendall expanded the concept to become part in-person and part online. After each in-person event, an online film festival follows allowing world-wide access to all the amazing films that were Officially Selected for the current Season. “Fishnets and Film” is currently listed publicly on FilmFreeway, attracting film submissions from all over the world, and has recurring events in the CA Bay Area.
In 2023, Fishnets & Film, Inc. was formed as a non-profit 501(c)3 with a Board dedicated to making this world a better place through Queer Art + Cinema.
Fishnets & Film, Inc. has a clear mission to foster and celebrate BOTH the Queer Performance Art and Queer Cinema communities with the production of film festivals, drag shows, GALAs & special events, and films.
